Seems like the ghost that we are sharing our apartment with is being very mischievous. Yesterday when we came home, I found our kitchen window wide open. I lost a water canister, but glad that Laser Cat didn't notice the window open and falling to her death.

My husband doesn't believe that we have a ghost, but I have seen him a few times peering around the corner of our door ways.

I have a feeling he watches us when we sleep and feel soft caresses on my cheek or feel my hair move off of my face. I know it's not my husband cause when I'd wake up, I'd turn to him but see that he's sleeping and snoring.

Just a few minutes ago, as we were watching Aliens on the big screen, my daughter came to me and told me she heard a noise in the kitchen. I noticed that Laser Cat was also staring towards the kitchen. So the King just went into the kitchen to see. I went as backup. We checked everywhere. Nothing.

Is it bad when the cat stays behind in the light... watching very closely?

Weight Loss

My husband is on a journey of weight loss. He is on a 2000 calorie diet and had already lost approximately 16 pounds. He wanted to show me what 16 pounds could be compared to.

See the ham he's holding. That is 16 pounds.

It's interesting after we moved to Denmark, we had lost weight as it is... but to continue the journey is very brave. I am very proud of him.

As I took another look at the photo... looks like the two skulls are biting into the ham.

It's normally a two hour trip to Copenhagen, one that I normally sleep away, but this time I kept myself busy with needle binding.

Copenhagen surely can't be compared to Houston, and I know Houston can't be compared to something like New York City, but after living in Denmark for three years, Copenhagen is always a nice outing. I especially love the variety of restaurants, such as the Paskistani/Indian restaurant we ate at. Mmmm....

We also attended the Erotic Convention. I giggled like a highschool kid and was awed at my first strip show. I was totally embarrassed with the male stripper. His show was not intended for the female crowd, dancing to "Relax", lathering his chest with white lotion, in his white undies and cowboy boots. Very disappointing. Still... it was fun and I saw a porno video version of Avatar. Nice. :)

Nålbinding

A new hobby of mine, Nålbinding has become such an addiction. I think I have made 20 hats of various sizes. Most are going to be Christmas gifts to my Houston familia eventhough cold winters aren't a known there.

I made these socks yesterday, using some leftover yarn. The colors are kinda funky, but the socks are warm and comfortable. I think after last years winter, which was horrible for me, and with the high price of using heat, we pretty much lived in what I would consider subzero degrees, so being able to make my own socks will be pretty cool.

Busy

Boy have I been busy.

Started new hours at work. Early morning shift. Actually way too early for my taste.

Will start a new job come November. I am really glad for that because instead of it being an hour commute by bus, it's just a 10 minute walk. :)

Been going to language class at night and preparing for my big test in November and December. If I pass the test, then I am finally done with language class. My last step for an early residency is to organize a forening, society/interest group. I am pretty proud of myself at how much Danish I have learned in three years. I still have a slight problem with grammar, but from what I am told with practice it will get better, but the most important is the I am easily understood. Hmmm... people don't run from me anymore.

Last but not least, I have learned a new hobby called nålbinding or needle binding. I think it's going to be a well enjoyed diversion and a serious, costly addiction. I think I go to the yarn shop like every three days. Not good. :) I have been busy making 100 % wool hats, scarves, mittens, purses, and socks for my family in Houston. Christmas gifts that my daughter will be delivering soon.

I am finally back in Denmark after spending two weeks in Houston. I must say that I am a bit sad to be back. I know that there are so many reasons why my stay in Denmark might be much better, such as less crime and cleanliness, but geeze, Houston has my family and a wonderful Latin flair.

I can't help it, there's nothing like the love of a family and these guys are the best. We seem to be closer now than ever.

Galveston Island, Texas

Galveston Island is a barrier island on the Texas Gulf coast in the United States, about 50 miles southeast of Houston.

The island is about 27 miles long and no more than 3 miles wide at its widest point. The island's main access point from the mainland is the Interstate Highway 45 causeway that crosses West Bay on the northeast side of the island. The far north end of the island is separated from the Bolivar Peninsula by Galveston Harbor, the entrance to Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel. Ferry service is available between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. The southern end of the island is separated from the mainland by San Luis Pass. The San Luis Pass-Vacek Toll Bridge connects the San Luis Pass Road on Galveston Island with the Bluewater Highway that leads south into the town of Surfside Beach.

Originally, Akokisa and Karankawa Indians lived and camped here. Some believe the island is where Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and his party made a brief stop-over in November 1528, during his infamous Odyssey.

At least that is how I feel on this 2nd day of being in Houston.

I can say that I am not good with jet-lag. Whew! Like right now. It's 3:21 in the morning. What am I doing up? I am sitting here drinking cold refreshing tea and eating Cheetoh Puffs. AND I don't think my sister-in-law would appreciate seeing orangy cheeto stains on her keyboard.

I had a long flight Tuesday.  My first stop was in Frankfurt. I think I threw the check-in lady at the airport for a curve. She could not believe that I was traveling with only a back-pack... and then said that normally people would travel with several suitcases. I told her that I was okay with wearing only one pair of underwear, shirt and shorts for two weeks. That did not go down to well with her. :)

My first stop in Frankfurt was hectic. I did not know that it was a super, ginormous, scary large airport. With only an hour and 40 minutes to get to my gate, I think I had suffered several heart-attacks. Trying to get through security was a bitch and then I was reduced to a wee size when the German Customs' Officer gave me an icy stare. I thought to myself and said in child-like voice, "Mommy". Rammstein scares me.

By the time I made it to the plane, I was sweating from every possible area on my body. My shirt and make-up showed my true feelings. I was wedged between two American dudes who helped me dry up. They could not stop laughing at me. I think I was cracking too many jokes that you would say only to your close relatives. (Keld, you can only imagine how up-close and personal I can get with my jokes.) BUT, I managed to calm down. I think I downed four Bloody Mary's too. I slept almost through that 8 hr. trip. GOING THROUGH AMERICAN CUSTOMS IS A BITCH!  I had to explain why I was living in Denmark, what kind of work I was doing there, why was I coming back to the U.S., and why was I traveling with only a back-pack. Then I was stopped by three airport police, who asked to see my passport.  The same questions came up in conversation... and one made me open my back-pack to see what was inside.

When we landed in Boston, again with only 2 hrs. to get to my gate, after looking around for Continental, I finally focused on the sign and saw that I had to go to another terminal. On route and walking really fast, I got a really painful cramp. I am sure I looked like a freak, sweating bad, smeared make-up, and hopping/limping. I finally checked in.  Security was slow and as usual, they were demeaning to the people.

It was almost a 4-hour trip to Houston. I was very happy when we landed. As I walked out of the gate, I stopped at Starbucks and got myself a small green tea frap... hopping to the exit and sipping my drink I smiled when the doors to the outside open and I felt the rush of Houston's humid air on my face.

Happy to be back home.

My first day back to work, after being off for two months due to illness, the kids welcomed me with this little surprise.

I find it pretty interesting that when I had first reported it to my boss, he did not believe me. I remember him snickering and saying, "Øv!". (Maybe my explaining it to him in Danish was not impacting enough, I was clearly disgusted and pissed off.)

36 years of my life, I never recall having the urge to poo in the sink or to hold/touch it.

Normally I am not one who likes to take a stroll around town because people tend to stare hard. Makes me feel uncomfortable too.

But when I do, I enjoy the scenry.

This Bed and Breakfast has a bomb shelter in the front yard.

Afterwards I took a stroll in the cemetary which had a pond. Stayed there a while and enjoyed the stillness and fed the turtles.

Jutland trip

Skagen, once a remote fishing village and sparsely populated, became considerably easier to travel after it became connected to the rest of the country via a railroad line in 1890. It is extremely picturesque, and distinguished by its low, yellow houses with red tile roofs nestled into the beach areas.

The headland at Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark, is a spectacular setting where two parts of the North Sea, the Kattegat and the Skagerrak, meet. This makes for turbulent seas and strandings — beachings and shipwrecks are common. The frequent shipping losses and the strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmark's earliest lighthouses, the Vippefyr, constructed in the 15th century. A reconstruction of the lighthouse is located to the north of the town of Skagen.

The desertification that hit the area in the 18th and 19th centuries led to the abandonment of the old parish church to the migrating sands — the famous Buried Church, Den tilsandende Kirke. The tower of the church remains protruding from the dunes, as it was left as a sea marker when the church was abandoned at the close of the 18th century.

In central Skagen there is a teddy bear museum called Skagen Bamsemuseum.

We also went and saw Råbjerg Mile, where the only two significant migratory dunes exist today. An amazing sight to see.

CHILI MAC

One can say that if you take spaghetti and chili con carne, mix it together, you will get the famous Chili Mac. A dish that my family and I enjoyed during the winter and summer days. Well maybe not so much during the summer. Houston's heat was horrendous back in the days. We did not have central air, just fans and open windows. As a teen, I spent my summers taking cold showers and sticking my head in the freezer to cool off.

The Chili Mac is a dish that is so easy to make and a meal that even a kid would like.

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef / 453.6 grams
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 garlic clove, minced
1 can tomatoes with green chile, undrained
1 can pureed tomatoes
3/4 cup uncooked elbow macaroni
1 packet taco seasoning mix, or you can do your own HOMEMADE recipe (see below)
1 cup grated cheese, optional of what you like

Taco seasoning mix:

1 tbsp chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp salt

Brown the ground beef with the bell pepper, onion, and garlic in a large saucepan for 8 to 10 minutes over medium heat. Cook until the beef is no longer pink. Break the beef into crumbles and pout off the drippings. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, macaroni, and taco seasoning, and add 3/4 cup water, maybe a little more if it seems too dry. Bring to a boil. Simmer covered for 15 minutes or until the macaroni is done. Remove the pan from the heat and season to taste. Top with the grated cheese if desired.

This serves about 4 for normal people, but for our family, it serves 2.

Tortilla Soup

The quick and easy Tex-Mex version of this Mexican classic is made with Rotel tomatoes and crispy tortilla chips. Made with abundant garlic, it's not only delicious, it's the cure for the common cold. But, as we all know, the only way to come across Rotel tomatoes here in Denmark is to either order on-line or find your nearest American Store. The nearest we came across was in Malmø, Sweden. So, I substituted with putting chunks of jalepeno... but you can just use the canned tomatoes with chilis. No problemo.
This dish serves 6 to 8.

Ingredients:

1 whole chicken

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 medium onions, chopped

1 medium carrots, sliced or chopped. I prefer mine sliced and then cut in half.

3 medium potatoes.

1 tsp. oregano

1 bayleaf

One can of tomatoes. It does not have to be with chilis, but we prefer to have a little spice to it so I add one jalepeno.

Fun stuff to garnish your soup with:

Avocado's, sliced

1/2 cup chopped cilantro (coriander)

2 limes, quartered

1 fresh jalepeno, minced

Large bowl of tortilla chips

Split the chicken in half and rinse well. Place the chicken in a soup pot with 8 cups water, bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Cook for 45 minutes to an hour, until the chicken is completely cooked. Remove the chicken and set aside to cool.

Remove any skin or bones from the stock. Add the garlic, onion, celery, carrots, potatoes, oregano, can of tomatoes with chilis, and bayleaf. Return to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes or until all the vegetables are well done. When the soup is nearly ready, cut up some of the chicken meat into bite-size pieces, removing all skin and gristle.

To serve, bring the soup to the table and present it with a plate of chicken meat, the garnishes, and the bowl of chips. Each diner should crush some tortilla chips into a soup bowl, add chicken and condiments, and then ladle the soup over the top.

Angry Co-Workers

I can't understand why it's so important that I "hygger sammen", or socialize together during my breaks with my co-workers. Why is it a problem for everyone that I sit alone, read my magazine, and eat in silence?

I am a very quiet person. I may have this dark and brooding look to me, but I am actually happy inside. AND, as I recall, the last time I socialized with my co-workers, boss included, they all thought I was a huge freaking weirdo cause I was eating an avocado, tortilla sandwhich and reading the latest FANGORIA magazine that had a putrified zombie on the front cover.

So with this "hygger sammen" being brought up to me by my boss, and him telling me with pouty lips that they all hate seeing me eat alone, I will have to start working the early shift, 6 am til 2 pm. He says that I will have a better relationship with the girls.

Better relationship?

See the skeleton above? This skeleton caused a raucous the last day of school. The reason for it was because MJ and I decided to pull a prank on THE GIRLS. I figured since it was going to be the last day of school and MJ's last day to work with us, I should bring out Mads, the human skeleton, and place it in front of the window less doors. (These doors are the first to be opened and the first thing that the girls would see. )

It was positioned in the right spot. The plan was set.

I come in the next day to sour faces and doors slamming. Even the boss was upset and gave me a long hard look. The last day of school and not even a good bye, have a good weekend, hug and love you farewell.

Interesting come August when I am supposed to start early because I am expected to socialize and become better friends.

Roasted corn on the cob, is a popular street food served in Mexico. In Mexico, Chicago, and in the south of the United States, it is customary to consume elotes like a popsicle on a stick or by grasping the roasted husk of the ear of corn that have been pulled down to form a "handle". Hot chilli sauce can be spread on the elote as well as other condiments such as butter, mayonnaise, sour cream, cheese, lemon juice, and salt. Powdered lemon pepper seasoning is used on elote in Texas.

This Elotera roasted her corn in the oven and loves to eat it with mayo and chili powder.

There was this shell. A shell that I had to get. I did not want to get my shoes wet. So I took them off and tip-toed my way in. I was soon reminded of the horror of how cold the water is.

ANGLO AND TEJANO FOODS

I am a cooking enthusiast and extremely FOOD DRIVEN. Looking for super good recipes is a hobby of mine, especially if it's Tex-Mex, but Denmark continuously makes it hard for me. It's a country that isn't ingredient friendly. Most of the times I have to substitute or order from Germany and England.

My new cook book came in today. I ordered The Tex-Mex Cookbook by Robb Walsh. What got me interested in it was this, "The Tex-Mex Cookbook will delight "chile head", food history buffs, Mexican food fans, and anybody who has ever woken up in the middle of the night craving cheese enchiladas.

I AM ALWAYS CRAVING CHEESE ENCHILADAS!!!!!

(I couldn't help laugh at what I read below. It's from the book, but so true.)

     In 1835, when Juan N. Almonte wrote his "Statistical Report on Texas", there weren't a lot of things to count. Between Goliad and San Antonio, a distance of thirty-eight leagues, he couldn't find a single inhabitant. Between San Antonio and Austin, only a few houses were seen at intervals.

     Though the Brazos region was the most successfully cultivated, it offered the least comfort for outsiders. "Each settler lives independent of the whole world, having at home everything which he needs for himself but nothing for travelers", Almonte wrote of the Americans.

     When it came to food, Almonte found major differences between the Tejano and Anglo communities. His survey left us with a very interesting pair of grocery lists to compare:

     "The food most generally used among the Mexicans in Texas is the tortillas, beef, venison, chickens, eggs, cheese, and milk, and sometimes coffee, chocolate, tea and sugar may be secured", he reported.   "Among the Americans, the most common is bacon, and cornbread, coffee sweetened with bee's honey, because they have no cane sugar, butter, buttermilk, and sometimes crackers."
      No wonder the Anglos became so fond of Texas-Mexican food.

Going to the beach had always been one of my favorite things to do when I lived in Houston. The 60 mile trek to Galveston was a breeze. So many fun-filled memories as a kid, as well as a mom. I miss those days.

But... I think that the only thing dangerous here in Denmark, besides DF, is the cold water. Damned!

As you can see, I am not sure I will gather found beach memories while living here. Not even a pina colada could of warmed me up.

I was told that since I am on sick leave, I cannot go to the U.S. for vacation. :(

St. Petri Kyrka - St. Peter's Church

Here are some pictures of St. Peter's Church in Malmö, Sweden. It was founded in the beginning of the 14th century. All of it is built in the Baltic Gothic style, with flying buttresses and elegant arches soaring over aisles.

There is a towering alter piece that was consecrated in 1611. The four pictures, placed one above the other, depict the institution of the Lord's Supper, the Crucifixion, the Ascension and the Glorification. The floor of the Church was at one time entirely covered with gravestones.

It's not that often that I come across great people. .. not that I am saying none exist... especially here in Denmark. But to be honest, Jim and Peter were like the best of the best. Jim being the best friend a girl could have. It was an instant connection, the undertanding of what perverted humor is, fellow butt enthusiast, and awesome shopping buddy.

Then the time came for their departure. I just could not let them go without tasting my favorite dish of Carne Asada, Mexican rice, and homemade flour tortillas. None of that store bought crap! All home made!!!!

What I really like about our selected group of friends is not only the fact that they are the misfits of the Danish society, still rockers of Heavy Metal music, snake dealers, and just plain old freaks, but I love them for the fact that when someone needs help, they are there to offer themselves.

Of course, I have to admit, when we were told that there would be cinamon rolls and cake involved, we all jumped with no questions.

I was up pretty late the other night doing some homework. I think it was a little past midnight.
Susi, who normally sleeps at the same time as we do, did her best to stay up with me. She was on top of our dinning room table watching me write.

After coming back into the living room with a cold glass of water, I found Susi crashed on my book and papers. I didn't have the heart to wake her up and I knew it was her way of telling me to go to bed.

We were so excited when we found out that the grill house in Nykøbing was opened again for the season.
Eventhough it's about 45 minutes to get there, the burgers are all worth it. The best in Sjælland.

These past two months have been pretty hard on our family. Though we were able to manage those little bumps, the hardest was the loss of my dear mother-in-law.

I must say it was a shock. She was still young, and to the end, full of life.

I am not sure if there really is an afterlife. What I do know, she has left a great impression in my heart and memory. She will continue to live as long as I am alive.

My daughter, with video in hand, set out on a quest one Saturday morning. Her main goal was to seek out what was the reason why a person would leave their home country.

She pleasantly surprised me by showing up at the language school. Actually made me proud that she would consider all of us. (The weekday/night classes are more juicier than the small Saturday class.)

Anyway, here's a rough draft of her video of what she hopes will be the visual side of her 9th grade project. She is now working on the oral presentation, in which she tells me is the hardest.

There are a few things that I really enjoy about my new host country. The friends I have met along the way.

My old man has reconnected with most of his childhood friends. I on the other hand am a little more reserved about the people. I think because we really don't have much in common. So, when I do make friends, I make some really COOOOOOOL friends.

The Netherland herself, MJ, is one for example. She's liberal, can talk about all sorts of music, horror movies, books, share family stories of WW2, conservationist, loves cats, food, is learning to love hot peppers, is a swinger, a hash supporter, and so on... well maybe not the swinger and hash supporter, but who knows?

We threw her a party and had a blast last night. And you know what? Like humans and fish can coexist peacefully, so can Danes, Americans, Brazilians, and groovy Dutch people. GOLD MEMBER!!!

You know, I don't care how much people say that learning Danish is important to communicate and integrate with the populace, IT WILL NEVER BE MY FIRST LANGUAGE!!!

Case in point.

Friday, when MJ and I were walking out of our break room, me being in deep conversation about the lack of rock music, we passed through the hallway where all the kids tend to lounge. (After my last encounter with them, where I actually listened to what they were saying, I was called basically called a derogatory word... and was told by the vice-principle to ignore them. Which I do now.)

Anyway, MJ and I ALWAYS speak English. As we were passing the kids, snot-nosed 9th graders, MJ over-heard their conversation.

Boy 1: Man they really irritate me when they talk.

Boy 2: Yeah... but look at their tits.

As I was about to tease her about HIM and their song about tearing the wings of a butterfly, I saw that her face turned red. We had not turned the corner yet. I was asking her what was wrong. She grabbed my elbow and pushed me to walk faster.

In the teachers lounge, she told me what had happened and asked if she should report it. You can't report it if you didn't see who said it, right?

English will always be my first language. It is universal. As long as I am around my friends that are not from my host country, and prefer to use it, we will. Doesn't mean that I am going to force it onto the populace. I will be responsible and speak Danish through my husband. If push comes to shove, and I have to put on my boxing gloves, I can accomplish my Danish skills pretty good. BUT AGAIN... English will always be spoken to my old man, dander, and MJ.

Denmarks version of Halloween is coming up in a few weeks and the kids are working hard decorating their barrels. Today these barrels are filled with candy, fruit, and a black cat decoration on the outside. But back in the days, they were filled with an actual black cat. The kids, and probably adults, would beat on the barrels, with the cat inside. This was to ward off evil doings.

I have never attended a Fastelavn celebration, but I think it's cute when I see the kids get into the preparations, such as decorating the barrels.

Things that happened to me these past two months

1. Girl that made a joke about me being a darkie was reprimanded at school. Things are awkward now, since it seems we seem to ALWAYS pass each other in the hallway.

2. One of the little boys in the kinder class walked up to me, as I was arranging some tables, grabbed a hold of my hand and licked my arm. I pulled away from him and looked at him strangely. A pedagog quickly walked up to us, crouched down to him and asked him why he licked my arm. He told her that he wanted to see what I tasted like. He thought I tasted spicy hot. (Weird kid)

3. I had been asked by a neighbor at a dinner party I was having if I ate pork. I told him that I was Mexican-American. WE EAT EVERYTHING except for human flesh.

4. Walking back from language school and taking the shopping street route, I happened to pass a little old lady. She took one look at me and grabbed a-hold of her purse. Like really, really, REALLY tight death grip hold to it. I pushed out my bottom jaw, where the bottom teeth over-lapped the top teeth and held down my bottom lip and showed her my werewolf look. Bulging my eyes out didn't help. I wanted to make sure to REALLY scare her.

5. I have befriended a few of the 4th graders at my school. They are so funny that when they see me, they all charge towards me. Full-force. One time, I had to leave my cart and run for my life. Eventually they did catch up to me and I was bombarded with hugs. Damned my slow 40-something legs. :)

6. My stupid co-worker scared me so bad that she made me fart... REALLY LOUD.

What I hate about snow is the fact that I can never get to work. The small country roads get all iced over and the snow-plowers seem to forget that people do live out in the boondocks.

So there we were... MJ and I were stranded at the bus station and freezing. We did try to make an effort to wait for the bus. Two times! But bus never came.

After the second attempt, we decided to have lunch at Føtex. After an hour of prolonging our intake of burger and fries, without a bus sighting, we left for the apartment.

Bossman was not happy, but what could we do?

Then I noticed that our fjord was semi-iced over. Cool!

Yeah, we had a snow storm on Tuesday. I was a somewhat freaked out about it cause in Houston we really don't get much snow. MJ and I were able to leave work early, which I think pissed off the other two ladies. BUT HEY, we live about 25 kilometers away and have to take public transport. Anyway, bossman told us that the last bus was leaving at 12:30 and to take it.

We made it back into town and was bombarded with dangerous snow flurries.

MJ had to put her shades on. Who knew that snow could burn your eye?

The walk from across the street took us a while. Snow was piling up and we could not stop laughing.

My last classroom to clean was a shock. Not that I am surprised that this had happened, since lately I have been cleaning huge piles of crap from the restroom floors and decorated smeared pooed walls. Still I would think that the teachers would have consideration for us and wait til the last kid leaves the class and lock the door.

But NOOOO... door unlocked equals kids having a hell of a snowball fight in the classroom.

After making our way through the snow filled streets of Malmö, we came across an American store.
The last time my husband saw me all giddy, laughing like a crazed woman, and jumping with excitement was our trip to London last year. Saturday was pure excitement for me. Oh how I miss home.

I walked out of the store with a back-pack full of rootbeer, variety of candy, a large can of tomatillos, syrup, mustard, etc... It was heavy, but all worth it.

Looking through Kalundborg's LOF course programs, I came across the title above. With the little Danish that I know, I believe it says, "Women, know your car!".

It's a three-hour course in Ubby. A mechanic will show you where, how, and the importances of oil, coolant, window glass cleaner for vehicles. All basic car maintenance, which I just realized that took for granted while living in the U.S. cause my dad and brother would always take care of my vehicle maintenance for me. I mean, I was never a goober about vehicle maintenance. I knew the basics and could manage myself if needed, but still...

I was told by some of the girls at the sprogskole that I go to that they are doing a cooking course in Thai cuisine. I still have not found it. I love Thai and Vietnamese cuisine so I was hoping to take a course this coming year.

One of the hardest parts of living abroad during holidays is being away from your family.

I have not been one who really enjoyed all the chaos that comes with celebrating Christmas. Living in Houston, the kids and I spent it quietly. Their father and I would split the holidays. Normally, I'd have them for Thanksgiving and he would for Christmas, but as they grew older, they'd spend it with me. Sometimes I'd have to force them to open their presents, three days later.

Don't get me wrong. It wasn't ALL HUMBUGISH. Of course we'd have my parents and brother over for Christmas eve dinner, and then the next day, for lunch. It was just quiet.

So with the Christmas holidays approaching, I was dreading the unknown. I know this is one of the biggest holidays for the Danes. They start preparing in October. Next comes the outrages Christmas lists. How can one afford the desired gifts, I will never know.

Stress. Stress. Stress. That is what I do well.

Anyway, we spent our Christmas Eve with some really good friends. They are actually very sweet.

It was a very traditional dinner. Duck, pork, potatoes, and gravy. Dessert was rice pudding with almonds. Our hostess is a very good cook. Along with another American couple, after dinner, we played a very long game of UNO.

I have not had a Christmas eve like this in a very long time. It was actually enjoyable. Great conversation. Great friends.

Even if I couldn't spend this holiday with my Houston family, spending it with the King, my Dee, and my small, but close group of friends was nice.

After visiting my mother-in-law, we stopped off near the town square. Coming up to this massive tree, I could only feel sad. Such a beautiful ginormous tree, to be used as a holiday decoration, then to be thrown away. My husband tells me that they are recycled... still...
As a child, we used a white metal Christmas tree that belonged to my grandparents. Bought sometime in the 1950's. Anyway, my brother who has upgraded to a more modern tree, still has that old 1950's tree. A sweet momento from our great ones.

I always look forward to receiving a new edition of Classic Rock Magazine. This is my gateway to proper rock music of every sub-rock-genre, old and new.

January's 2010 edition has the top best 50 albums, as chosen by classic rock critics. I was happy to see that Pearl Jam's, Backspacer came in at #22 AND I was shocked to see that Alice In Chains, Black Gives Way to Blue, came in at #1. Hmmm....

Looking forward to hearing the new albums from Muse, Black Crowes, Bigelf, The Dead Weather, Band of Skulls, and Queensryche.
